In just 12 months, The Christie, in collaboration with Just R, have achieved remarkable results by supporting the reduction of their nurse vacancy count from 106 to 37 (at time of writing – May 2023). Through our sustainable workforce solutions, we empowered The Christie with the tools to enable the appointment of a variety of roles, including 26 substantive nurses. The Trust have also recruited a cohort of 21 international nurses.

The Trust pipeline of interested candidates includes over 232 nurses and will only continue to grow, from which The Christie recruiting teams can continue to tap in to. The return on investment delivered through this project has also proven extremely efficient, with the average cost per nurse recruited being less than £1,885 vs circa £12,000 per nurse recruited internationally.

Just R do not charge per hire, thus increasing the cost saving through our long-term partnership with The Christie.

The Christie came to Just R in 2022 with the need to reduce their nurse workforce shortage, with a strategy combining recruitment from the UK and Internationally.

Over the past 12 months we have worked with The Christie team to build campaigns around a wide variety of specialist areas enabling them to reach and attract values aligned individuals to join the Christie teams.

After 12 months, the results of the campaigns have been nothing short of inspiring, with nurses recruited directly through the project.

The Trust has also recruited a cohort of 21 international nurses, meaning their shortage has reduced by over 50% vacant nursing posts at time of writing.

Our mission is to support The Christie team to reduce pressures on their workforce, decrease agency spend and increase morale through reducing the workforce shortage across the organisation.

Stand out content includes Physiotherapist Kate Naylor who spoke candidly on video about how a short work experience placement had driven her to become a Physiotherapist and join The Christie post qualification (a truly inspiring story which now also features on Just R’s NHS Staff Stories site).

The return on investment delivered through this project has also proven extremely efficient, with the average cost per nurse recruited being less than £1,885 vs circa £12,000 per nurse recruited internationally. The cost per nurse through the campaign will only continue to reduce once more nurses are hired, as Just R do not charge per hire, thus increasing the cost saving through our long-term partnership with The Christie.

At Just R we are passionate about Trusts embarking on sustainable recruitment strategies. Local staff pools must not be ignored in favour of an international first strategy. This case study from The Christie is one of many which Just R have to demonstrate the effectiveness of multi faceted strategies which not only enable Trusts to recruit but also crucially retain their nursing workforce.
